Bike MS 2009 – Day 2

Ams ride 108

At breakfast I was feeling much better than I expected I would. We all ate a large breakfast, got our bikes and we were off again at little before 8:00 am. A funny thing we notice was as each person was getting on their bikes at the start line everyone of them would let out a low groan as they sat on their bike seats for the first time. We were not exceptions. That was still the most painful part of the whole experience, even with padded bike shorts.

As we got going all of us were feeling pretty good and we stayed together more than the previous day. Amanda had a difficult time with the route right before lunch and I had another dispute with my stomach somewhere between miles 55 and  68 like the previous day. Nick suggested I have some food with salt at the next rest stop and that helped tremendously. As we were edging closer to the finish line we hadn't seen any other riders for quite a while. We figured we were going to be the last ones who finished. But we were very excited to finish!

We crossed the finish line at almost the exact same time we had the previous day, a little before 5:00 PM. One hour to spare before they closed the course down. We were happy to see other large groups of riders coming in after us, we weren't last after all! Not that it really mattered but it made us feel better anyway.

Looking back on the whole ride, it wms ride 089as actually much more difficult that what I had anticipated. Before the ride 150 was just a number it could have been 400 or whatever, sure 400 I can do that. Now I have a better reference :) It was difficult physically but much more difficult mentally. That was something I never anticipated. All that said it was a great experience overall and the whole team is talking about doing it again next year. Although next year we’ll shoot for the Minnesota ride, we hear that’s an easier course :)

Last but not least, a special thank you to all who donated to my team and my $1000 fund raising goal. When I went to bed the night before the race I was sitting at a little over $500, a substantial amount I was proud of. When I got home from the race and checked my email Monday morning a last minute donor had graciously contributed a very large amount to push me over my goal. A very special thank you to you, you know who you are. In total my team raised over $3000 for helping those with MS and MS research. Thank you all for making this possible. If your still interested giving, donations are open for our team through September
